How the fortune was built

Musk's first windfall came from selling his early software company Zip2 to Compaq in 1999 for $307 million, netting him about $22 million personally.

The second came almost immediately. After his online bank X.com merged with Confinity to form PayPal, eBay acquired PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion. As the largest shareholder, Musk walked away with roughly $180 million.

He famously redeployed nearly all of it: $100M into SpaceX, $70M into Tesla, $10M into SolarCity. By late 2008 both Tesla and SpaceX were near bankruptcy and Musk had to choose where to put his last cash. He split it between them.

Tesla's IPO in 2010 and the global EV boom turned his ~13% stake into the engine of his wealth. The 2018 performance-based stock award — worth up to $56 billion when fully earned — multiplied it further, even after a Delaware court voided it in 2024.

SpaceX, still private, became the world's most valuable private company at roughly $350-400 billion, and Musk owns about 42% of it. xAI, founded in 2023, added another paper fortune in just two years.

The net result: a fortune that has spent most of the 2020s as the largest on the planet, with day-to-day volatility measured in billions.
