Colossus 2 reaches first million-GPU milestone in Memphis

xAI confirmed this weekend that its second Memphis supercluster, Colossus 2, has crossed the one-million-GPU mark — making it, on paper, the largest single AI training site ever built. Musk framed the buildout as essential for training Grok 5, which he claims will exceed GPT-5 on reasoning benchmarks by year-end. Local utilities are less enthusiastic: the Tennessee Valley Authority has flagged that xAI's mobile gas turbines continue to operate without final air-quality permits, and the NAACP has renewed its lawsuit against the facility. Musk's response on X — 'we will be the cleanest hyperscaler in the South by 2027' — did little to calm critics.

Tesla expands Robotaxi service to Phoenix and Miami

Tesla quietly flipped the switch on its Robotaxi network in Phoenix and Miami today, bringing the total number of US cities to seven. The rollout uses the Cybercab pilot fleet plus retrofitted Model Y units running FSD v14. Early riders posted mostly positive videos, though several clips show the vehicles hesitating at unprotected left turns. The NHTSA confirmed it is monitoring the expansion but has not opened a new investigation. Wall Street liked the news: TSLA closed up 4.6%.

Starship Flight 18 nails second Mechazilla catch of the booster

SpaceX successfully caught the Super Heavy booster of Starship Flight 18 with the Mechazilla arms for the second time this year. The upper stage completed a full orbit and splashed down in the Indian Ocean within 200 m of its target — the tightest landing ellipse Starship has achieved to date. The mission also deployed 28 next-gen Starlink V3 satellites, each capable of direct-to-cell service. Musk said in a brief post-flight stream that crewed lunar Starship tests with NASA are still on track for Q4 2026.

Musk and Trump trade barbs again over Epstein files

The on-again, off-again alliance between Elon Musk and Donald Trump hit another low today, with Musk reposting unverified claims about the unreleased Epstein files and the President responding from Truth Social with a threat to 'look very carefully at SpaceX contracts.' Defense officials briefed reporters off-record that no contract review is actually underway. Inside X, content moderation teams flagged dozens of posts in the resulting thread for harassment but, per Musk's standing policy, left them up.

Neuralink publishes 24-month data from first ten Telepathy patients

Neuralink released a peer-reviewed preprint covering 24 months of data from the first ten participants in its Telepathy trial. All implants remain functional; eight participants use the device daily for cursor control, two have added speech decoding modules. The paper acknowledges thread retraction in three patients during the first six months — a known issue — but reports no serious adverse events since month nine. The FDA is expected to decide on broader trial expansion later this summer.
